Situation Hounding the Floyd County Animal Shelter

Anyone visiting the Floyd County Animal Shelter will undoubtedly notice a large percentage of dogs there are Beagles and Coonhounds, both purebred and mixed. This is a direct result of owner reluctance to spaying and neutering these breeds, primarily used for hunting or selling as pups and breeding stock.

Coonhounds fall into many categories consisting of the Black and Tans, Redbones, Blue Ticks, Plotts, English, and Walkers. While Beagles range from small to medium in size, hounds are medium to large, weighing between 45-95 pounds. These large gentle dogs make excellent companions with a few considerations: They have lots of energy and love to chase anything and everything…and they sure to like to bark and bay (half howl). They require a large fenced area and enjoy the companionship of another high energy dog to play with. If there is room in your home and room in your heart, please adopt one of these beautiful dogs and enjoy the unending entertainment they'll bring to your family. The Floyd County Humane Society has many beagles and hounds in foster care as well. Click on the Dogs to Adopt or Floyd Pound links to see dogs currently available.

Types of Coonhounds

Black and Tan - Black coat with tan trim. Gentle and loyal hound with a "cold nose" (scent ability for an old scent trail).

English - White coat with bluetick or redtick coloration (ticking is numerous small spots of color). English hounds are the original ticked hounds.

Redbone - Solid sorrel coat (sometimes with white on the chest or feet). Redbones possess a superior "cold nose" (scent ability for an old scent trail) and have superior trailing abilities.

Bluetick - White coat with heavy ticking - some are so heavily ticked they almost appear solid colored. Blueticks are the most striking in color of all the hounds. The mingling of black and white ticking gives a blue effect although it's common to see tan trim.

Plott - Brindle colored hound. Plott hounds are known for their ability as bear and boar hounds and are unsurpassed as pursuers of game.

Treeing Walker - White coat with large black and/or tan spots and ticking. Walker hounds are direct descendants of the famous Walker foxhound, to which it is identical in color and appearance. Walkers are "hot nosed" (scent ability for the freshest trails).

Coonhounds are unique dogs because they are scent hounds
They are best suited to a fenced yard, kennel, or as an indoor pet, as their strong sensing abilities can lead them astray.

Beagles come not only in two sizes, they come in two types — field and show. Field-type dogs are bred to hunt and have a higher energy level. They may also be more pack-oriented and less likely to thrive as the only dog in a household. Show-type dogs are more compact and have been bred for temperaments that do well in families.
