Adoption Procedures

Below is a copy of the contents of an adoption contract that would be filled out and signed when adopting an animal from the county shelter. You can obtain a copy of the adoption agreement by visiting the shelter and adopting a new friend.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE AND AGREEMENT

Release, Waiver and Disclosure

  1. That the County of Pulaski makes no claim or representations as to behavior or temperament of animals put up for adoption.
  2. That the pet I am adopting, from the County Animal Shelter, has not been examined by a Veterinarian and that it's health history, age, spay or neuter is unknown.

I hereby accept possession and title of the animal at my own risk and hereby release and waive any rights against the County of Pulaski, all it's employees and Board of Supervisors, which I may have now or in the future for any damages to person or property caused by said animal and to any health problem the animal may have now or in the future.

Citizens seeking adoption SHALL:

  1. Present valid identification;
  2. Be 18 years of age or older;
  3. Take animal to Vet and have rabies vaccination within 10 days of adoption;
  4. Purchase county dog tag within 10 days of adoption;
  5. Abide by the County Animal Control Ordinance;
  6. Keep animal in your possession for 6 months or return the animal to the shelter;
  7. MUST have animal spayed or neutered within 30 days;
  8. May not adopt more than 2 pets from shelter in a 6 month period;
  9. Pay shelter fees of $5.00 / animal and $1.00 / day boarding fee;
  10. CALL THIS OFFICE WITHIN 10 DAYS WITH YOUR TAG NUMBER (674-8359)

PUPS - require rabies shot and county tag at 4 months old
CATS - required to have rabies shots at 4 months old

Sterilization of this dog or cat is required under this article; (3.1-796.126:2) if a person violates this article they are subject to a civil penalty; and the new owner may be compelled to comply with the provisions of this article. If adopted dog or cat is lost or stolen or dies before animal is sterilized, the new owner shall notify Animal Care and Control within 7 days.
